CLGF Southern Africa Regional Conference

On the 28th and 29th of June 2016, the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) Southern Africa Regional Conference was at Emperors Palace, in Johannesburg. The conference was organised by CLGF in collaboration with CoGTA and SALGA and was attended by honourable ministers from various Southern African countries along with their South African counterpart, honourable Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Des Van Rooyen. Various leaders of local government associations, mayors, councillors, LED practitioners, academics and other stakeholders were also in attendance.

The conference was held todisseminate the outcomes of CLGF’s regional programme on supporting local governance and local economic development in Southern Africa as well as exploring further the role of local government in delivering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Minister Des Van Rooyen delivered a keynote opening address and various distinguished speakers made presentations thereafter followed by robust discussions. One presentation worthy of mention was that of mayor of City of Johannesburg, Mr Parks Tau who maintained that we need to mobilise donor funding that is available to local governments in localising the SDGs. “Unless we create a framework for local authorities to access donor funding we won’t be able to implement the SDGS”. He said.
